Do I
Know?
(April 26, 2012)Do I know what love’s about?
It isn’t always “sing and shout!”.
Sometimes it hurts when love comes 'round.
Love always has its ups and downs.
But real love’s like a balance beam;
Sometimes you fall, sometimes you leanTo keep it right, and let it show.
And some may say, “I told you so!”.
Love all you have, and freely give.
We all need love to help us liveThat happy life, with no distress.
But sometimes love is just a guess.
Day in, day out, love takes its flight
To bless all people day and nightLike 'Santa Claus' on Christmas Eve;
Love makes you doubt, but still believe
That love is good for each new day.
The secret is, “Give it away!”.For if you give, it will come back.
To freely give it leaves no lack.
Real love is only given to
Those who most need it: (me and you!),It is not seasonal, you see,
It thrives, though humans disagree.
It’s not determined by the 'look',
And love’s not something from a book.It happens when we want it to:
You see each person as you choose.
It doesn’t seek just looks and poise,
And doesn’t use folks like they’re toys,Nor in a play upon a stage,
It quells the anger, hate and rage.
It understands when some descend
Our baser self may yell, and rend
The ones to whom we’re closest drawn,
Though life’s askew, we must go on
To find the higher things in life,
That we must help their hurt and strife. We must account for what we’ve done,
And face our hearts, yes, one by one.
How will our record on this earth
Look then to us, and show our worth
Where love was given, freely, purely,
To the ones before us, surely
“If we don’t, who will?”, we quote.
And so the book the 'holy' wroteTo show us truth, and love so pure,
While helping others to endure
The pain and agony they face
While standing in their awesome space. It is love's duty, one and all,
To love our neighbor, lest they fall.
Some day, when we shall face our fate,
Should it be sad, or yet be great,
We must account for what we’ve done,
And face our hearts, yes, one by one.
And that will be the time we'll know
That we did all these things belowThat helped our peers, and showed them true
That perfect love, from me and you.
